Angelina Jolie makes rare comment about eldest daughter Zahara
Angelina Jolie’s eldest daughter, Zahara, is all grown up. The 20-year-old attends Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, but although her parents are famous, she’s kept herself largely out of the spotlight.
Zahara has made some appearances alongside her mother, but Angelina has not kept relatively quiet about her daughter. That’s until now, with the actress making a rare and telling comment.
While on a visit in Ethiopia with her eldest son Maddox in 2005, Angelina Jolie adopted her eldest daughter, Zahara. On their second trip to the country, Brad Pitt joined them and made the adoption official to adopt her.
Jolie and Pitt’s past is a troubled one, and reports suggests that Zahara has a strained relationship with his father. However, that is not the case for the 20-year-old and her mother.
Angelina and Zahara have made public appearances at different events several times. Jolie is, of course, very proud of her daughter. For example, during a Time 100 Talks in 2020, as Angelina interviewed Vanessa Nakate, a climate activist from Uganda, she praised Zahara.
“My daughter is from Ethiopia, one of my children… And I have learned so much from her,” Jolie said. “She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman and her connection to her country, her continent, is her own and it’s something I only stand back in awe of.”
These days, Zahara is all grown up. In late 2023, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia. She has made several public appearances, including when she was a keynote speaker for the Women in Training Inc.’s fourth Mother-Daughter Brunch in Montgomery, Alabama in November 2023. When the devastating wildfires raged in Los Angeles, Jolie and her children volunteered to help those affected.
“Her kids are volunteering around the state, asking for what’s needed and jumping in,” a source close to angelina told People Magazine in January. “She went to see the firefighters at the Rose Bowl and is close to the team at World Central Kitchen.”
The source continued, “Overall she is trying to listen and follow and not get in anyone’s way. She knows what’s important is to bring supplies and donate and fall in line. She isn’t posting or announcing efforts. Just trying to listen and learn.”
In later years, things have been largely quiet surrounding Zahara. But that changed recently as Angelina Jolie made a rare comment about her eldest daughter. The actress, attending the premiere of her new movie Couture at the Toronto International Film Festival, answered a question about Zahara and what she has been up to.
Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Jolie and the journalist discussed how is to send children off to college. The actress reflected on her own experiences.
“You know, the great thing is, she’s going to return even more of a woman, even more of a mind, even more of a thinker,” Jolie said. “You’re going to learn so much from this extraordinary person she’s going to become,” she went on.
Jolie continued: “My daughter’s in her last year of university. I just feel like I got to have the great gift of being able to learn from her and hear what she’s doing and live vicariously. It’s amazing!”
